A strong storm that hit the southeastern parts of Australia caused flash floods that isolated several cities in the interior of the country, and some residents had to take shelter on the roofs of their houses, local authorities said.

Most affected were rural communities in the Hunter and Mid North Coast regions of New South Wales, Reuters reported.

In some areas, more than four months' worth of rainfall fell in the previous 24 hours.

"We're dealing with an enormous amount of rain. The ground is already saturated with water, the rivers are up, and the rain just won't stop," NSW Emergency Services Minister Jihad Dib said.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology warned that up to 300 millimeters of rain could fall in the next 24 hours, which is three times more than the average May rainfall.

In the towns of Taree and Glenthorne, on the Manning River, more than 300 kilometers north of Sydney, people climbed onto verandas and rooftops as rescue teams struggled to reach them by boat and air overnight.

Emergency Services Commissioner Mike Wassing said the priority is to save the most vulnerable and those who cannot leave their homes.

"Right now we're focusing on people who are on the roofs or on the floors of their houses," Wassing said.
