They relented under the threat of the USA: Trump finally agreed a ceasefire?

The move, aimed at reducing tensions, follows repeated warnings that US officials have privately sent to the Iraqi government since Donald Trump took power in January, according to six local commanders from the four main militias, Reuters reports.

Iraqi commanders have said that if action is not taken to disband the active militias, there are fears that America could launch airstrikes.

A senior Shiite official close to the Iraqi government, Izzat al-Shabandar, told Reuters that talks between Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani and several leaders of pro-Iranian militias were "very advanced" and that the militant groups were ready to respond to US calls for disarmament.

"The factions are not stubborn or insisting on continuing to operate in their current form," he said, adding that the groups are fully aware that they could be targeted by the US.

"(US President Donald) Trump is ready to raise the war with us to a higher level, we know that and we want to avoid such a bad scenario," said the commander of the most powerful Shiite militia, Kata'ib Hezbollah, with his face covered by a mask.

Iraqi commanders said their main ally and patron, Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), had given them the blessing to make whatever decisions they deemed necessary to avoid being drawn into a potentially devastating conflict with the United States and Israel.

Let's recall that Iraqi militant groups, supported by Iran, carried out numerous attacks on Israel after Hamas's attack on the Jewish state on October 7, 2023.

After the attack, these groups began their operations, first attacking US troops in Syria and Iraq, and then expanding their actions to attack Israel itself, for which they mostly used drones, since Iraq does not border Israel.
