His opponent, Eurosceptic right-winger George Simion, has 45.73 percent of the support of Romanian voters, reports Digi24.

Who is Nicușor Dan?

Dan, a 55-year-old mathematician, ran as an independent candidate and promised to crack down on corruption.

Dan, who has been mayor of Bucharest since 2020, is known for his technocratic style and anti-corruption stance. He built his political career on promises of reforms and transparency.

He first gained national prominence more than a decade ago as the founder of the "Save Bucharest" Association, a civic initiative whose goal is to protect the Romanian capital from poor urban planning and corrupt local government. The group's success catapulted him into politics, where he quickly became a leading figure in Romania's modern reformist movement.

As a strong supporter of the European Union, Dan has repeatedly emphasized Romania's commitment to Ukraine, arguing that this support is vital to protect Romania's national security in the face of Russian aggression.

After the polls closed, Dan said that "elections are not for politicians" but for communities and that in the last vote "the community of Romanians won, the community that wants deep changes in Romania."

"When Romania goes through difficult times, let's remember the strength of this Romanian society," he said.

"There is also a community that lost today's elections. A community that is rightly outraged by the way politics has been conducted in Romania so far," Dan said.

In the first round, held two weeks ago, Simion, the Eurosceptic leader of the far-right party Alliance for the Union of Romanians, was surprisingly convincing, with almost 41 percent of the vote.

Dan, an independent candidate who entered the race as mayor of Bucharest, won almost 21 percent of the vote.
